Tabernacle(1866)Welsh Independent / Congregational, Dumfries Street, TreorchyBuilt: 1867 [Sittings: 500]
Tabernacl was the initial cause for the Congregationalists of Treorchy. Meetings were initially held in the 'long room' of the Cardiff Arms Hotel. Ther also lay claim to be the first church of any denomination in Treorchy. Image © Copyright Glamorgan Archives - Reference: MGCS/CS/54.131
The church had strong links with the Abergorki Colliery with meetings also held in the carpenter's shed and a Sunday School in a locomotive shed which the named 'Synagog'.
And whilst the increased population were also attracted to other denominations, the initial building of 1867 proved within 10 years to be too small. And with no prospect of building a larger edifice on this site it was neccessary to look elsewhere and the story of Tabernacl continues at Hermon and Bethania.
I have retained the 2009 photograph here but you will find what presently stands on the site, and the back story, elsewhere. However I must mention that the local authority appear somewhat naive inasmuch that even such a modest building did not have protected status.
