Siloam(1887)

Welsh Baptist, Gelli Road, Gelli

Built: 1891 [Sittings: 700]

Siloam was a branch cause of Hebron, Ton-Pentre. The 'Mother' church was receiving so many members that it even considered extension. And with the rapid expansion in Gelli the alternative decision to locate there was the correct one.

The cause initially met at the home of a soon to be eminent deacon at premises opposite the Ystrad Hotel. At incorporation, the church boasted of some 94 members which soon grew. Looking at my statistics, there must be some mistake since only 90 were recorded (Baptist Handbook) in 1905 yet the Revival figures quote 244 for the same year.
These heady days gave way to the depression and membership never exceeded 100 with only some 15 when the chapel closed in 1977.
It was subsequently used for commercial purposes but destroyed by fire in 1988 to be replaced some years later by the present-day housing 'Siloam Court'
