Summary statistics for Rhondda Deanery

[I now copy the statistics(other tables were purely of a financial nature) as published in the appendix. The population figures are in accord with what was published in the census but differ mostly to the ward figures for the Rhondda Urban District.]

5303. Now we pass to what I understand is your own parish? - Yes.

5304. Will you tell us what you have to say about that; you have got it in front of you? - The parish of Llwynypia was created from the parish of Ystradyfodwg in 1879; the parish of Tylorstown was created in 1887.

5305. The new churches that are mentioned are items going to make up the 51 mentioned above? - Yes. In 1883 the parish of Ynyshir was formed out of the daughter parish of Llwynypia and a portion of Llanwonno.

5306. (Archdeacon Owen Evans) Perhaps you had better read the number of new churches in order to get them on the note? - In 1879 the parish of Llwynypia was formed out of the parish of Ystradyfodwg. There are five new churches and mission rooms and a parsonage house. In 1887 the parish of Tylorstown as created from the parish of Ystradyfodwg. There are three new churches and a mission room and a parsonage house. In 1888 the parish of Ynyshir was created from Llwynypia. There are two new churches and a parsonage house. In 1893 the parish of Treherbert was formed out of Ystradyfodwg; three new churches and a parsonage house. In 1898 the parish of Cwmparc was formed out of Ystradyfodwg; there are three new churches and a parsonage house. In 1900 the parish of Ferndale was formed out of the parish of Ystradyfodwg and there are five new churches and mission rooms. Then the other parishes I have mentioned already, Cymmer and Porth, formed out of Llantrisant and Llanwonno, and Dinas and Penygraig , also formed out of Llantrisant and the daughter parish of Llwynypia.

5307. (Chairman) Will you go on with your statement? - ..............The population, according to the last census return, is 21,964......The churches in the parish of Ystradyfodwg are the parish church, St. John's; St. Peter's, Pentre; St. Stephens's, Ystrad; St. David's, Ton; St. Mark's, Gelli; and there are five mission school rooms.

5308. With regard to the accommodation, how do you get the 420; what does that figure refer to? - To the accommodation in the parish church.

5309. How do you come to be aware of that? -

5310. That is allowing a certain space? - Yes, it is a little more now.

5311. What is that space? - It was 18 inches.

5312. That is Welsh? - Yes, that is Welsh.

5313. The services there are Welsh? - Yes, they are all Welsh.

5314. At St. John's Parish Church? - Yes.

5315. Then I see 800 at St. Peter's? - Yes.

5316. How do you come by those figures? - That is the estimate of the architect who built the church.

5318. It was built to hold so many; that is it? - Yes.

5319. Then St.Stephen's, Ystrad? - 400; correctly speaking, it should be 402 or 406; I am not quite sure which, so I knocked off the odd number. That is according to the estimate of the architect and according to the measurements of the Incorporated Church Building Society.

5320. I have something to say about those. I may as well go through them all. The next is St. David's, Ton? - Yes.

5321. That you have given here as 550; is that the architect's estimate? - Yes.

5322. E. 200? - Yes.

5323. That is St. Mark's, Gelli? - Yes.

5324. Is that also the architect's estimate? - No; it is my own estimate.

[Estimate's, rounding down, et al, the total accommodation for the five equates to the summary figure as shown in the statistics. However, there is not enough evidence on these pages to agree each parish.]

5330. You will give me the number of Communicants at each church, and the total? - Yes. Communicants, (a) St. John's, 250; (b) St. Peter's, Pentre, 340; c) St. Stephens, Ystrad, 150; (d) St. David's, Ton, 355; (e) St. Mark's, Gelli, 58; total, 1153.

[That also agrees.]
