Evidence intoduction for Reverend William Thomas

6006. You are all Welsh-speaking; is that so? - Except the honourary lay reader, and he can speak a little Welsh.

6007. You are Weslh-speaking yourself? - I am Welsh-speaking myself.

6008. The churches, I see, are marked A, B, C, and D in your statement, and they represent: A, St. John, Cymmer; B, St. Paul, Porth; C, Cymmer School Church (St. James); and D, St. Paul's Mission Room. The accommodation is St. John, Cymmer, 500; St. Paul, Porth, 305, Cymmer School CHurch(St. James), 400; and in St. Paul's Mission Room 700. Now will you kindly let me know how you got those figures? - The plans of St. John's Church were supplied by the architect, and they were framed and put up in the vestry by the former vicar, and the accommodation is given there-supplied by the architect.

6009. That applies to St. John's? - That applies to St. John's and St. Paul's.

6010. In each case there is a plan upon the vestry wall? - In each case.

6011. What do you say as to St. James, the school church? - The contractors were requested to build a mission church large enough to accommodate 400.

6012. How do you know they were requested to do so? - What they charge for building an iron church is £1 per sitting.

6013. And you know the price? - I know the price.

6014. Then what about St. Paul's mission room? - The architect was requested to build a room large enough to seat 700, and the room will really accommodate more than 700. We have had more than 700 in it at a time comfortably.

6015. That is better evidence than anything obtained from the architect. You have seen more than 700 people there? - Yes.

[The total accommodation of 1,905 does concur with the overall Church statistics.]

6016. At St. John's the service is in English? - Yes.

6017. That is the church that accommodates 500. Is that the church where you perform the services? - I officiate in all the churches. I take my turn.

6018. What do you think is the Sunday morning attendance-what number? - I had them casually counted a little time ago, and on that particular morning-which was quite an ordinary morning-the attendance was 119.

6019. (Mr. S. T. Evans) Is that St. John's? - That is St. John's.

6020. (Chairman) St. Paul's, Porth, is also in English. You told us that 305 is the accommodation. Can you give us any information of the attendance in that church-the actual attendance? - Did you ask me for the attendance in the morning at St. John's, and not for the evening?

6021. I will now ask you for the evening, I forget it? - I have an average attendance of 280, and that is putting it below the mark.

6022. (Lord Hugh Cecil) Is that evening and morning? - No.

6023. (Chairman) In the morning you say 119? - Yes, and 280 in the evening as an average.

6024. Now will you tell us the same things in respect of St. Paul's, Porth? - The attendance at St. Paul's averages about 100 in the morning and 300 in the evening.

6025. The church is pretty full in the evening? - Yes.

6026. As to Cymmer school, what do you say as to that? -The morning attendance is about 85 on an average and the evening about 200 on an average.

6027. And there the service is in Welsh? - Entirely in Welsh.

6028. What abou St. Paul's mission room? - We only hold ocassional services at St. Paul's mission room-children's services chiefly.
