Welsh Church Commission - Chairman's Report: Rowland L. Vaughan Williams - 1st November, 1910 <<>>.....We have examined 135 witnesses, who can be classified as follows:- i. Church of England Witnesses:-.......... Total number of Church of England Witnesses .... 42 ii. Nonconformist Witnesses:- (a) Particular Witnesses: who were generally Nonconformist pastors and spoke as to their work of Nonconformity in particular localities, and whose evidence was first-hand evidence of matters within their personal knowledge. (b) County (or Borough) Witnesses: These witnesses gave evidence of matters not always within their personal knowledge, but based on information which they, being already conversant with Nonconformity in Wales, possessed in virtue of that fact, or which they had acquired by diligent inquiry. Many also produced the original schedules sent in at the request of the County Committees which undertook the preparation of evidence on behalf of the Nonconformists. These original schedules formed the basis of the Nonconformist Statistical Tables which we have used after such verification and corrrection as was possible by comparison with the Year Books, with such schedules as were supplied, and in some cases with the Monthly Meeting Reports, to supplement the evidence and figures supplied to us by the denominational witnesses. (c) Special or Denominational Witnesses, who, though many of them gave evidence in particular localities, were generally selected by their denominations to give evidence as to the organisation, etc., of the particular denominations to which they belonged. We have in the main adopted the figures supplied by these witnesses as the basis of our Report so far as it relates to Nonconformist statistics.
